As Natural as Your Own Teeth

Inlays and onlays make it possible to replace unsightly and unhealthy metal fillings with beautiful, long-lasting, tooth-colored restorations. Dental inlays and onlays are porcelain or composite resin restorations used to restore teeth that have only a moderate amount of decay. Perhaps their most important benefit, however, is that in saving damaged teeth, Inlay/Onlays help our patients avoid the need for more extensive costly treatment.

  • What is an inlay? An inlay is like a porcelain puzzle piece that covers only the grooves between the cusps (highpoints) of your teeth.
  • What is an onlay? An onlay covers a greater amount of the tooth surface and usually includes grooves and cusps.

Onlays and inlays offer many benefits, including:

  • Aesthetic, metal-free beauty
  • Maximum tooth integrity
  • Improved bite resistance
  • Long-lasting protection against decay
  • Prevention against shifting teeth

Post-Operative Instructions

After your procedure, you may experience numbness of your lip, tongue or palate for several hours. Do not chew gum, eat or drink hot liquids until the anesthetic has worn off to prevent injuring your cheek or bruising yourself.

Soreness may also occur at the location of the crown or in the surrounding gums. Take an analgesic such as Advil® or Tylenol® to increase your comfort. Also avoid sticky or crunchy foods for several weeks, as they may loosen or fracture your restoration. If your bite persists in feeling awkward, please call the office to have it adjusted.

“Dr. Singh was very patient and professional. She listened to me and took the time to answer my questions and concerns. She also made sure that I was aware of all my options.” - A satisfied dentalroots patient
